24 Dec JOY TO THE WORLD!
“Joy to the World” is one of my favorite carols and one of the best known of all the Christmas songs. Isaac Watts, who is widely regarded as one of the finest hymn writers in history, penned these words in 1719. He took his inspiration from Psalm 98. Originally written as a hymn to the Lord’s second coming, this hymn points us toward unspeakable joy and reminds us that every heart should prepare him room.
One would think that the exuberant joy expressed through his lyrics would be indicative of stability, prosperity and health. In fact, Isaac Watts lived during a time of uncertainty, a time of great pressure to conform to the Anglican Church, and a time of persecution for the Christian faith. Sound familiar? Uncertainty, pressure and persecution are not at all uncommon over three hundred years later. But we shout….
JOY TO THE WORLD! The Lord is come! JOY TO THE WORLD! Our Savior Reigns! JOY TO THE WORLD! He comes to make his blessings flow!
Every generation faces challenges. Let us be like Isaac Watts and find inspiration during difficulty and create beauty for generations to come!
